2018. gada 14. decembrī Latvijas pastāvīgā pārstāvniecība ANO Ņujorkā līdzorganizēja svinīgo ceremoniju par godu Mozambikas deponēšanas akta iesniegšanai ANO. Mozambika kļuva par Ieroču tirdzniecības līguma (ATT) 100 dalībvalsti un saskaņā ar līgumu, iestāsies par starptautiskā miera un drošības uzturēšanu un nekontrolētas ieroču izplatības mazināšanu.
Vēstnieks Andrejs Pildegovičs apsveikuma uzrunā uzsvēra, ka Mozambikas pievienošanās ir būtisks solis līguma universalizācijas virzienā un atgādināja, ka ATT mērķu īstenošana ir atkarīga no katras dalībvalsts līgumā noteikto saistību izpildes.
Pasākumā piedalījās arī ANO ģenerālsekretāra vietniece Atbruņošanās jautājumos Izumi Nakamitsu, kura uzsvēra, ka šī ir ne tikai nozīmīga diena ATT, bet visai ANO Atbruņošanās dienas kārtībai. Pasākumā bija aicināti arī iepriekšējo ATT prezidējošo valstu – Japānas, Somijas, Meksikas un Nigērijas pārstāvji. Pārstāvji atzīmēja nepieciešamību veicināt līguma ratifikāciju visos pasaules kontinentos, lai sasniegtu ATT mērķus un mazinātu ciešanas, ko izraisa nekontrolēta ieroču tirdzniecība.
2018.gada augustā Latvija tika ievēlēta par ATT prezidējošo valsti uz vienu gadu. Uzņemoties prezidentūras pienākumus, Latvija apņēmās veicināt līguma ratificēšanu Āfrikas, Āzijas un Amerikas kontinentos. Latvijas prezidentūra noslēgsies ATT plenārsesijas nedēļā 2019. gada 30. augustā.
Ieroču tirdzniecības līgums tika parakstīts 2013. gadā, un Latvija bija viena no līgumu parakstītājvalstīm. Ieroču tirdzniecības līgums nosaka eksporta kontroles standartus starptautiskajai tirdzniecībai ar konvencionālajiem ieročiem. Prezidentūras sākumā līgumu bija parakstījušas 97 pasaules valstis un dažu mēnešu laikā tam pievienojās Surinama un Gvineja –Bisava.
Latvija ir pirmā no Baltijas valstīm, kas prezidē ATT. Prezidentūra ir brīvprātīga.
